Sweet and savory, Chikki™ is our crunchy new Devanagari, Gurmukhi, and extended Latin type family. Mix all six weights to create some funky typographic designs, and use the variable version for extreme flexibility with online & print layouts.

Take a Bite

Chikki is a tasty Indian sweet. The ingredients vary by region, but the one we are used to in Mumbai is usually made with peanuts and jaggery. It’s crunchy & yummy!

Paper to Beziers

Kimya began this design with some simple Devanagari sketches. Jump forward a few years and the drawings were re-discovered, digitized, and sculpted into what is now Chikki. The Latin came much later and was made to match the nearly-completed Devanagari. This process resulted in interesting designs that would not have been the same (for either script) if the order was reversed.

Crispy Chikki

One of the most obvious features of Chikki is its lack of curves. Rounded shapes are represented with straight lines and sharp corners have been nibbled off.

The Light weight is close to monolinear, whereas the Black features a bit of contrast. There are subtle references to stroke angles, but this was definitely not written with a pen.

The six weights range from Light to Black to allow for greater typographic control, legibility, and hierarchy at any size. While Chikki is primarily a display design, the letterforms and spacing have been clearly refined and optimized to work also at small sizes and to be clear for reading longer amounts of text.

Chikki Gurmukhi

Chikki Gurmukhi is the latest addition to the family! The Gurmukhi design started as a part of the 35 days of Gurmukhi challenge, and was later extended to the full character set with the help from native Punjabi readers and designers. Special thanks to Kawal Oberoi for his valuable feedback and encouragement :)

The Gurmukhi letterforms adapt to the flavor of Chikki and makes it their own — additionally there are fun elements like Phulkari patterns that make the typeface even more fun!

Chikki is Variable!

Are you using Variable fonts yet? If not, we suggest you jump in and start playing with Chikki Variable*! This new format allows you to fine-tune any weight between the Thin and Black extremes. This is ideal for websites because there is only one linked font file instead of multiple. While the format is great for the web, it’s also useful in desktop design apps so you can have the flexibility choosing any weight, and not just the pre-defined six.

* The variable font comes FREE in the Chikki Complete font packages (.ttf for Desktop + App/ePub, and .woff2 for web fonts). It is not available separately.

When we hear it, we eat more. When we don’t—as in the case of Magnum bars, or a soggy, muted potato chip—we resort to other senses, looking at our food with doubt or sniffing it for signs of expiration. Psychologically, our lust for crispy sustenance is baked in. But why is it so satisfying to create a cacophony of crunch? And if we love it so much, why do some of us actually grow agitated when we hear someone loudly chomping away? It turns out there’s a lot more to eating with our ears than you might have heard.

License FAQ

Desktop:

Commercial: This is for general use for most (offline) typesetting. The fonts may be used for just about any print application, including branding, logos, magazines, posters, etc.

Personal: This license is only for individuals who are using the fonts for their own private, non-commercial use. This generally means personal projects for school or home use with no direct or indirect connection to making money. This license is explicitly excluding any use on published materials, branding for business, or for anything with commercial intent.

Student: This discount is valid for current, full time students of any level. The student license remains valid even after graduation, and is allowed for commercial work, so you don’t need to worry about re-licensing later.

Web:

Our web fonts are distributed as WOFF, WOFF2, & EOT formats. They are licensed per domain and based on the traffic your website receives at the time of licensing. So, if you start out smaller then grow, there’s no need to update your license later. It’s also a one time fee so there are no annual or reoccurring costs.

< 100K pageviews/month: For websites with under 100,000 pageviews per month.

< 1M pageviews/month: For websites with 100,000 to 1 million pageviews per month.

< 10M pageviews/month: For websites with 1 to 10 million pageviews per month.

> 10M pageviews/month: For websites with more than 10 million pageviews per month.

Embedding:

App: This license is for embedding fonts into mobile or desktop applications. The license is valid on a per major version of your app. Meaning, the fonts are always allowed on smaller free updates to your app, but for more substantial paid updates an additional license must be purchased.

ePub: This license covers most digital publishing formats including EPUB, AZW, IBA, PDF, and others. The fonts are licensed on a per-title usage, but they may be used on any number of different file formats for the same title (meaning you can produce EPUB & PDF versions of the same title with the same license). Per-title means one specific book or one issue of a magazine, not a series. Additional titles can be purchased later for only a bit extra.
