How do your licenses work?

We have three different licenses depending on the usage situation: Desktop, Web, and Embedding (App & ePub). All are written in (mostly) simple English and are concise and easy to read. We want everything to be clear and understandable for everyone.

And regarding selecting which license to purchase, these are the options available and what they mean:

Desktop Use:

Commercial: This is for general use for most (offline) typesetting. The fonts may be used for just about any print application, including branding, logos, magazines, posters, etc.

Personal: This license is only for individuals who are using the fonts for their own private use. This includes uses such as school projects or dissertations, or general privately published non-commercial designs. It is not to be used for advertising or branding no matter how small your business may be. In short, the work you produce with these fonts must not be connected to financial transactions or gains.

Student: Our discount for current full time students is 70%. Just send us an email and attach a scan of your current student ID or proof of registration and we will send you a discount code to use for the fonts. This student license remains valid even after graduation, and is allowed for commercial work, so you don’t need to worry about re-licensing later.

Web:

Our web fonts are distributed as WOFF, WOFF2, & EOT formats. They are licensed on per domain based on the traffic your website currently receives. So, if you start out smaller then grow later, there’s no need to update your license.

< 100K pageviews/month: For websites with under 100,000 pageviews per month.

< 1M pageviews/month: For websites with 100,000 to 1 million pageviews per month.

< 10M pageviews/month: For websites with 1 to 10 million pageviews per month.

> 10M pageviews/month: For websites with more than 10 million pageviews per month.

Embedding:

App: This license is for embedding fonts into mobile or desktop applications. The license is valid on a per major version of your app. Meaning, the fonts are always allowed on smaller free updates to your app, but for more substantial paid updates an additional license must be purchased.

ePub: This license covers most digital publishing formats including EPUB, AZW, IBA, PDF, and others. The fonts are licensed on a per-title usage, but they may be used on any number of different file formats for the same title (meaning you can produce EPUB & PDF versions of the same title with the same license). Per-title means one specific book or one issue of a magazine, not a series. Additional titles can be purchased later for only a bit extra.

How do I upgrade the # of users or buy extra styles of a font family?

It’s simple: Our policy is that you are always able to upgrade your number of licenses / domains / apps / ebook titles and you simply pay the difference.

The whole process is quick and easy. Just send us a message and we can help you out!

Can I try a font before buying?

All of our fonts are available to test online. You can find testing areas on both the individual family’s page and on this overview page of all families.

But to try the fonts offline, and even see them printed, we offer special Trial Fonts. You are welcomed to download, install, and play with them to help aid in your decision to make a purchase. The trial fonts’ license only covers testing and making mockups – they may not be used in commercial or finished work. However, students may use them for school projects. The fonts are heavily subset, and not all weights/styles of each family are available, but there should be enough to give you a good idea of what the fonts are like. You can find much more information, the EULA, and download link over at the Trial Fonts page.

Do you give student discounts?

Yes we do! We remember what it was like to be on a student’s budget, so we offer a 70% discount for all currently full-time students. And of course you can keep using your fonts after you graduate and you can even upgrade to larger packages later.

Getting the student discount is easy, simply select the student license at checkout! We don’t make you jump through hoops to prove you are a student 😄 We trust you 😄

Please note, the student license only covers the “Commercial” (Desktop/Print/Raster/Offline) usage. If you need to use the fonts on a website or app, please contact us.

Do you offer discounts for universities?

We are happy to help you supply your class’ computers with fonts. Please contact us and we’ll send you discount codes for bulk orders.

How do your webfonts work?

Our webfonts come in the .woff, .woff2, and .eot font formats and are offered for self-hosting on your own server. This means you simply 1) download the files from us, 2) update your CSS with the new fonts names and some short license information, and 3) upload the font file directly to your server.

I lost my font. Can I re-download?

Of course!

Your purchase history is stored in your ‘My Account’ area. There you can re-download any previous purchase with the latest version of the fonts. We often make small changes like adding some kerning, adjusting an outline here or there, or extending the glyphs or language support. You are able to keep up to date and grab the latest and greatest version through your account. If you require an older version of the fonts just let us know and we can send them to you directly.

I can get fonts for free or almost free from many places. Why should I buy them?

Our fonts are of the highest quality and were made with a great attention to detail and lots of love. A text typeface like Vesper is drawn and refined over the course of several years. Our fonts are extensively tested and perfected for use in most sizes, printing techniques, and digital rendering. We use the latest technology in font production and ensure the greatest possible forwards and backwards compatibility (most of our fonts even contain extra, future-looking, OpenType features that are not yet accessible by current applications).

In short, we strive to give you what you pay for. With free fonts you will often encounter a variety of poor outlines, no/incomplete/bad kerning & spacing, limited character sets, ‘unoriginal’ designs, software crashing… but hey, they are still free. Our fonts are all unique designs that are full of features, support many languages and provide for numerous typographic requirements. On top of that, we also provide personalized technical support and warranty for our fonts!

Don’t take our word for it… John Mayer thinks you should buy fonts too 😂

Why aren’t your fonts on MyFonts?

We don’t currently (and haven’t ever) distributed our fonts on any other sites. We have a “boutique” mind set and prefer to keep things simple & personal here dealing directly with our customers. This way you will always know what you are getting from us, and if you have any problems you can easily reach us directly. With distributors it can be questionable if you are getting the latest and greatest versions of the fonts and getting customer or technical support can be difficult. We also appreciate rare and exclusive things more than things from mass market outlets.

Plus, MyFonts is owned by Monotype 🤮

Do you feel bad about how much paper you use?

Yeah :( Quite a lot of paper is required for test prints and type specimens is a requirement for most of our projects. To help repent for our paper consumption, we’ve pledged to plant a tree for every new font we release. To date, we’ve planted 181 trees (with http://plantit2020.org). By our very conservative calculations (based on the low estimation of 10,000 sheets per tree Source: Sierra Club, we estimate that these trees will produce roughly 1.8 million letter/A4 sized sheets MORE than we’ve consumed (not taking into account recycled content). Based on other calculations (like the one here) we may have provided up to 14.5 million extra sheets!

This is one small way to help offset some of our footprint.

We are proud to do many other small things like using energy efficient devices/lights, recycling, and not being wasteful in general.

Services

Do you offer custom font designs?

Yes, we do (in fact, we dedicate about half of our time to custom projects).

You can learn a bit more about our custom font services here.

Please contact us and let us know what you have in mind.

Are your fonts available for OEM?

We offer special OEM licenses, please contact us for details.

We would like to have one of your fonts modified for our company’s corporate design. Will you customized it for our needs?

Of course. This is a common request and we are happy to help.

Let us know what you are looking for.

One of your fonts is missing an important character for me. Can you add it in?

We are always expanding our character sets to support more languages and writing systems. We are happy to help and draw additional glyphs for our designs.

Please contact us to discuss what you are looking for.

I have a font (not made by you), can you make some changes for me?

Maybe. This always depends on the license of the particular font. In many cases we should be able to work with you and make the changes, but we’d need to see about the specific case first.

What other services do you offer?

We specialize almost entirely only in fonts. We don’t do graphic design, rarely do lettering, and never any web design… This allows us to focus purely on black and white curves, spacing, and innovative OpenType features for you to use for your design work.

Technical

How do I install my fonts?

Basically you can just unzip the package and double click the font file to install. If you prefer to use a font manager or manually install it to a special location, then check those instructions – but in that case you probably already know what you are doing, so stop reading here.

What font formats do you offer?

All of our desktop fonts are in the OpenType formats of either TrueType (.TTF) or PostScript (.OTF). Web fonts are packaged in both Web Open Font Format (.WOFF & .WOFF2) and Editable Open Type (.EOT) for use online. Embedding licenses come with both .OTF or .TTF and .WOFF/.WOFF2/.EOT files to suit most embedding situations.

Are your fonts Unicode encoded?

Yes, all of our fonts are Unicode compliant OpenType fonts. Unicode ensure cross-platform compatibility and supports most of the world’s writing systems.
